Research Center for Urban Health and Sports
Building Healthy and Active Lifestyles
In 1953, the Research Center for Urban Health and Sports (RCUHS) was established as the Department of Health Science and Physical Education, under the auspices of the President of Osaka City University. This department served to teach health science and physical education to undergraduate students. Between 1965 and 1994, it was considered part of the Department of Liberal Arts. In 1994, it acquired the status of an independent research institute, and in 2006, it was reorganized as the RCUHS. The Center offers lectures, practice (in several sports), and applied experiment classes in health and sports science as part of its general education classes. The applied experiment classes, which were initiated earlier than those at other universities, are designed to improve students' understanding of the physiological and psychological effects of human movement and sports activity. Members of RCUHS are working to advance interdisciplinary research in health and sports sciences, so as to contribute to the development of healthy and active lifestyles in modern society. The RCUHS offers a series of open lectures in health and sports sciences for local citizens and publishes the Journal of Health and Sport annually.
